The way of Saint James from Burgos to Leon

  8 days / 7 nights / 7 walking days

This section of the ‘Camino Francès’ follows the itinerary from Burgos to Leon, two towns with a rich history. The itinerary crosses the Messeta, the oldest and biggest plateau of the Iberian peninsula. Every small town along the route is a treasure to discover: typical local habitations, old churches, famous monasteries and a characteristic nature...

Day 1

Individual arrival in Burgos

Day 2

From Burgos to Castrojeriz

Today a very long section across the Meseta. At extra cost and on request there is the possibility of a transfer to Hornillo del Camino to shorten the route. After the suburbs of Burgos, the route comes to Rabe de las Calzadas, then climbs up to the plateau before descending to Hornillo del Camino, a timeless village built along its one street. Back up to the plateau, descend to Hontanas, and we arrive at Castrojeriz along a charming valley.

Distance:38,7km; walking time about 10hrs; altitude  departure: 856m – altitude arrival: 800m

Day 3

From Castrojeriz to Fromista

Up to the plateau again before going down to cross the twelve arches of the Itero bridge of the river Pisuerga which marks the frontier between Burgos and Palencia provinces. The Romanesque bridge of the 11th century lost its medieval look during a reconstruction in the 17th century. You come to the Castille canal (17th century) which is followed to the entry into Fromista, whose church of St. Martin is a model of Romanesque architecture.

Distance: 25,5 km: walking time 6 hrs 30;altitude departure: 800m - altitude arrival: 780m

Day 4

From Fromista to Carrion de los Condes

To get to Carrion, there are two possibilities: follow either the official, most direct route, difficult to get lost because of the route marks, or a more rural path beside the Rio Ucieza. In either case a detour via the centre of Villacazar de Sirga is worthwhile. From afar it is impossible not to notice the immense church high above the fields...not without similarities with a certain cathedral at Chartres!

Distance: 20,5 km; walking time: 5 hrs 15; altitude departure: 780m - altitude arrival: 840m

Day 5

From Carrion de los Condes to Moratinos

After Carrion you pass the San Zoilo monastery, which is the oldest Romanesque building from Carrión de los Condes. The monastery is already mentioned in documents of 948. The facade is in the late Gothic style. The route before continuing across the 'paramo', or 'desert' pass through a number of places before getting to isolated Moratinos, from where there is a transfer for overnight to the interesting town of Sahagun, which has a nice church from the 12th century.

Distance: 30,5 km; walking time: 8 hrs; altitude departure 840m - altitude arrival: 816m (Sahagun)

Day 6

From Moratinos  to Burgo Ranero

After breakfast you will have a taxi back to Moratinos (although you can start from Sahagun if preferred) and then continue over the immensity of the Paramo, today lined with trees to provide some shade for travellers. Another variant is also possible, called the Calzada de los Peregrinos.

Distance: 27,9 km; walking time 7 hrs 30; altitude departure: 816m (Sahagun) - altitude arrival 878m

Day 7

From Burgo Ranero to Mansillas de las Mulas

Also two possible routes today as far as Reliegos, where the two routes converge before arriving at Mansillas de las Mulas, where your overnight is.

Distance: 20 km; walking time: 5hrs 30; altitude departure: 878m - altitude arrival: 799m

Day 8

From Mansillas de las Mulas to Leon

A comparatively short and very pleasant section with a beautiful descent into Leon, one of the most important towns of the Camino Francés. To the north you have a nice view of the chain of mountains forming the Cordillera Cantabrica. End of the trip in the end of afternoon in Leon. On request you can book an overnight in Leon (excluded in the price).
