 FROM LOGROÑO TO BURGOS 

7 days / 6 nights / 5 walking days  

 

Leaving Logroño, the route, before arriving to Castilla, crosses the fascinating area of Rioja. This section of the Cammino de Santiago de Compostela finishes in the beautiful town of Burgos. During this walking holiday you will pass two interesting towns, Najera and Santo Domingo de la Calzada.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Programme

 

Day 1

Individual arrival at Logroño

Logroňo, situated on the banks of the river Ebro in the Rioja, is a town with 150.000 inhabitants. The town had roman origins. Interesting to visit are: the church of "Santa Maria de la Redonda" (15th century) and the Gothic cathedral with an entrance in the Rococo style.

 

Day 2

From Logroňo to Nájera

You leave Logroňo to enter the lovely area of Pantano de la Grajera, a 32 hectare lake surrounded by woodland. Next, you pass through Navarrete, town of potters, then enter beautiful Najera via the Alto de San Anton, where once there stood a Templar monastery. 

Distance: 29,1 km; walking time 7 hrs; altitude departure: 400m - altitude arrival: 485m

 

Day 3 

From Nájera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Today's walk gives the first taste of what the route will be like until we enter Galicia, as you cross the Spanish Meseta, the high plateau of corn fields where shade comes but rarely. Fortunately, just before Ciruena, a beautiful grove of oaks offers sanctuary before you reach Santo Domingo de la Calzada. This small medieval town, situated on the banks of the river Oja, is named after San Domenico, an hermit, which built here a street and bridge for the pilgrim's

Distance: 20,8 km; walking time 5hrs 30 min; altitude departure: 485m - altitude arrival: 638m

 

Day 4

 

From Santo Domingo de la Calzada to Belorado

The itinerary undulates over the bare, grandiose landscape of the Meseta, as you quit Rioja to enter the immensity of Castille and the province of Burgos. Leaving Santo Domingo, a variant is available to avoid part of the N120. Your overnight is in the small town of Belorado.

Distance: 26 km; walking time 6 hrs 40; altitude departure: 638m - altitude arrival: 796m

 

Day 5

From Belorado to San Juan de Ortega (transfer back to Belorado)

For the first part of the day you are on the Meseta but then things change quickly as you cross the 'Montes de Oca', covered in forest and once the realm of wolves and highwaymen. After Villafranca, the route goes through forest to Puerto de la Pedraja (1150m), and crosses the plateau to San Juan de Ortega, where the monastery of San Juan is built in a Romanesque and gothic style. (Taxi back to Belorado for overnight).

Distance: 24 km; walking time 6 hrs 15; altitude departure: 796m - altitude arrival: 1012m

 

Day 6

 

From San Juan de Ortega to Burgos

After breakfast the taxi will bring you back to San Juan de Ortega to begin the walk. Leave behind the forests of 'Montes de Oca', to go down to the fertile plains of the Rio Arlanzon. To avoid the suburbs of Burgos, it is recommended to take a slightly longer route into Burgos via the parks of Fuentes Blancas and Miraflores. Dinner not included tonight in Burgos but there is a wide choice of restaurants in the old town. 

Distance: 27,6 km; walking time 7 hrs 15; altitude departure: 1012m - altitude arrival: 856m

 

Day 7  

After breakfast is this tour finished

every day from Eastern till 1 of November

Level 3 / 4

The daily itineraries pass through moderately mountainous country and hill terrain. On some days the amount of ascent and descent is quite considerable. Daily walking distances are between 15 and 36 km (with an average of 3 – 4 kms walking an hour). This route requires a certain amount of experience and familiarity with mountain terrain. A good level of fitness for walking is necessary.  

Climate

Continental, warm and dry in the Summer and cold in the Winter. During Springtime and Autumn in maybe cold in the mountainous areas.
