a cycling holiday through an unexpected Holland

Cycling around the IJsselmeer is an extraordinary experience! The lake was formed in 1932, after the damming of the former, 'Zuiderzee’. Before the 20th century, there were around the lake many small but lively villages where thousands of families lived from fishing. This belongs entirely to the past now. Today, the IJsselmeer is especially known for the indescribable silence and for the beautiful nature. On the banks of the lake, you will discover charming villages and towns. Enjoy the views over the water, the green forests and the enchanting Dutch polder landscapes!

  •  Picturesque towns like Amersfoort, Edam, Kampen, Bolsward

  • The magnificent nature of the Veluwe, polder landscape and IJsselmeer

  • The typical Dutch farm houses, traditions and culture.

  •   The Dutch hospitality

Day 1

Arrival in Nunspeet.

Nunspeet is situated in the middle of the beautiful nature of the ‚Veluwe’. Around Nunspeet, old farms, green meadow-land and wooded banks can be admired. That is why this village is called the‚ pearl of the Veluwe’.

Day 2

Nunspeet - Amersfoort (ca. 60 km / 37 miles)

The first cycling day brings us to Amersfoort, a town where history is still alive. Behind the old walls, you can walk through the cosy streets. It is also the perfect place to go shopping.

Day 3

Amersfoort – Purmerend (ca. 70 km / 43,5 miles)

On the third day, we cycle to Purmerend. On the way to Purmerend, a very interesting sight is the Naarden-Vesting, one of the best preserved fortifications in Europe. The landscape is dominated by the ancient bog ‚Eemland’.

Day 4

Purmerend – Enkhuizen (ca. 56 km / 35 miles)

On the way to Enkhuizen, you should really visit Edam, very famous for its excellent cheese! Another place to see is the ‘Broeker harbour’. Our destination, Enkhuizen, was in the ‘Golden Century’ a leading port. Today Enkhuizen is an important centre for the tulip cultivation, an agricultural market and a town loved by tourist.

Day 5

Enkhuizen – Harich/Lemmer (ca. 35-40 km / 22-25 miles) This cycling tour will guide us through the typical Frisian landscapes. Stavoren for example has become very popular as the Eleven Cities Tour passes over there.

Day 6

Lemmer/Harich - Zwartsluis (ca. 50-62 km / 31-38 miles)

Between Lemmer/Balk and Zwartsluis, we will cycle through the national park ‚De Weerribben’, an ancient peat moor area. The former fortress Swartsluys is today the place to be for water sporters.

Day 7

Zwartsluis – Nunspeet (ca. 52 km / 32 miles)

The most outstanding place of interest on the way to Nunspeet is Kampen, once a Hanzestadt. This city has not less than 500 monuments. After having passed the small village Noordeinde, we are back in the‚ Veluwe’ landscape, and after again an unforgettable cycling trip, we arrive back in Nunspeet.
