BICYCLE TOUR, FROM MUNICH TO LAKE GARDA

A cycling holiday of 8 days / 7 nights

 

This bicycle tour, which follows a part of the cycle track running from “Munich to Venice”, is pure leisure and adventure, you will cross the Alps from Germany over Austria and then you will reach Italy. In Bressanone you will take the Eisacktal cycle path and continue along the river Etsch. Later on you will reach the biggest and one of the best beautiful lakes of Italy, Lake Garda.A complete tour through three different countries, mostly on cycle routes, cycling paths or on small side roads: you will explore amazing natural and cultural beauties. Your tour starts in the capital city of Bavaria, Munich, and leads you along Bavarian lakes and Tyrolean rivers, up to the Austrian-Italian border. You cross beautiful valleys, the Wipptal and the Eisacktal, and reach South Tyrol and its capital,Bolzano, where you will see lots of interesting sights. Then your route goes on, you cycle along river Etsch, along fruit meadows and green fields, and finally you reach beautiful Lake Garda.

Day 1

Individual arrival in Munich

Day 2

Munich – Tagernsee (approx. 60 km)

You leave Munich along the river Isar and you will find yourself immersed in an unspoilt nature landscape. The river accompanies you as you cycle along the cycle path direction South. Soon you will reach Lake Tagern (Tagernsee), a famous sight and tourist attraction in the Bavarian Alps and one of the clearest and most beautiful lakes of the area.

 

Day 3

Tagernseee - Jenbach (approx. 62 km) 

Today you will follow river Isar, which will lead you to the holiday region Achensee with the homonymous mountain lake. You can enjoy a boat trip on Lake Achen before continuing your way down to the Inn valley to Jenbach, where you will spend the night.

 

Day 4

Jenbach – Brixen (Bressanone) (approx. 90 km + train)

From Jenbach you cycle on the cycling path – along the River Inn, into Tyrol’s capital Innsbruck. You visit this enchanting town with its famous Golden Roof (Goldenen Dachl) or maybe go on a tour on Mount Isel with its ski-jump and visit the “Berg-Isel-Museum” in remembrance of the battle of Mount Isel under the freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. Transfer (train or bus) will do the demanding part from Innsbruck to the Brennero Pass, which is border between Austria and Italy and at the same time watershed and cultural axis. Only a few buildings remind of the former border between the two European countries. From Brennero you cycle along the old railway track to Vipiteno and further to Bressanone.  

 

Day 5

Brixen – Bozen (Bolzano; approx. 40 km)

The tour continues along the Eisacktal (Eisack valley) past the city of Ponte Gardena with a view of the castle Trostburg. From here, the valley gets narrower on its way to the capital town of South Tyrol, Bolzano. The town itself has much to offer, the arcades, the lawns by the river, a visit to the Ice Man in the Archaeological Museum or sitting and drinking a coffee in one of the many cafes in town.

 

Day 6

Bolzano (Bozen) - Trento (approx. 65 km).

From Bolzano there are two ways to get to Salorno (Salurn). Its 13th century castle is perched strategically on a rock. Either along the old railway track to Überetsch and then on further to Caldaro and Lake Kalterer See, or through the wide Etsch Valley along the bike path.At Salorno you leave the German speaking province of South Tyrol and enter the famous Trento wine growing region and the Diocese town of Trento

 

Day 7 

Trento – Riva del Garda / Torbole (approx. 40 – 50 km)

Today, after passing the old Tyrolean border town of overeto, you leave the Etschtal valley and go over the San Giovanni Pass rising to 287 m in altitude above sea level on the route to Lake Garda , the largest lake of Italy. Along the shores are typical harbour towns and it is also a place of good food and nice wines !.

 

Day 8

Period 

Arrival every Saturday from 05/05 till 15/09/2018. From 16.09 to 06.10 arrival to Tegernsee (train journey Tegernsee-Munich included). On request with a minimum of 5 pax  is another starting date possible. High Season: 23/06- 08/09 (included)

level 2-3 

The route is designed for experienced cyclists because of long distances. Route is varied and the most demanding stage over the Alps (Innsbruck-Brenner) can be shortened by train or bus. Between the Etsch Valley and Lake Garda there is only one long ascent. There is time to look at cultural places of interest or relax along the way. Total Km: 375 Km.
The tour is not suitable for children under 14.
