LA COSTA BRAVA: BIKE, BEACH  AND SEA

a 7 or 8 days cycling tour

The Costa Brava has a fascinating rugged coastline, which has drawn many famous people throughout the centuries, like Salvador Dali - the famous surrealist painter whose house can be visited in Cadaques-, Ferran Adria - the acclaimed Chef of the world-famous El Bulli, and several outstanding pro-riders – who now use this area as their training playground. The name “Costa Brava” literally translates into “wild coast” in English. This name reflects the handsome, rugged landscape of the region and its windy, changeable weather. Once you have been here, you’ll agree that this charming area was worth to visi and when you return back home after this lovely cycling holiday, be sure you’ll want would like to take as much as possible of it with you!

By bike, you’ll arrive to the small port of Llafranc , then by the inlands, you’ll arrive to the village of Begur . The town is dominated by the imposing silhouette of the medieval castle. Although at first glance it seem that the centre has an undefined set of houses in different styles and materials, some streets have a very special charm. You continue cycling through the forest and you arrive at the beach of Sa Riera , the largest and closest beach to Begur. The beach is named after the Riera river that divides it in half; even today there are still old fishermen's houses next to a yacht club, a recreational area. Following small country roads you pass the medieval village of Pals , a charming fortified village and well maintained. The name derives from Palus, which means swamp. The town, in fact, stands on a hill overlooking a valley once a swampy area. The tour of today ends in Peratallada.  Overnight B&B Hotel ***

Day 5

From Peratallada to Rosas (42km / 26 miles)

After breakfast in the saddle again and you come to Torroella de Montgri close to the river Ter. Torroella is a small and good preserved village at 6 km from the sea. Hence you go even further inland passing around the Montgri Massif. You arrive in Bellcaire d'Emporda, a small town with a rich medieval history. Then the route returns to the coast at Escala, a fishing village famous for the fishing of anchovies. The location of Escala is beautiful: a wide bay of blue and calm waters. The name comes from Scala, indicating the natural harbor of refuge for boats. Continuing to Sant Pere Pescador you pass St. Castellon d'Empuries. The historic centre of the town that bears this name is a real medieval jewel: cobbled streets, balconies with geraniums, narrow streets. Pedalling along the Via Verde you arrive in Rosas, the end of today’s ride.
